David Ferrer sealed his place in the Ordina Open final with a convincing 7-6(4), 6-1 with over Juan Martin Del Potro on Friday afternoon
Although Del Potro was obviously disappointed at the outcome and his tennis in the second set, at least it was a better result than their Australian Open clash at the start of the year which ended with Del Potro retiring at 2 sets to love down and not playing another tournament for 2 months
Ferrer's serving has been the bedrock of his success this week and he surpassed his efforts against Ancic with 77% first serves. However it was his play on the big points which did for Del Potro, saving all 6 break points the Argentine had and if Del Potro had converted any of those it may have swung the match. As it was he fell apart somewhat in set 2 and Ferrer raced into the final
Marc Gicquel made his first ATP final outside France (and 3rd overall), coming from behind to defeat Guillermo Canas 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Gicquel stepped things up a gear in the windy conditions, taking advantage of some dire serving from Canas (just 39% 1st serves) and breaking 4 times. Set 2 would have been a lot closer if Canas had taken any of his 5 break points but Gicquel was just too good in the 3rd, not letting the Argentine anywhere near his serve

Did you know that... Roger Federer didn’t lose a single set during the Australian Open in 2005.
