They say 3 is the magic number and Nicholas Almagro made it 3 straight Valencia finals with an easy 6-1, 6-4 win over Evgeny Korolev this afternoon
Almagro is undoubtedly the clay king so far in 2008, with an 18-1 match record on the dirt and he was always in control against Korolev who seemed slightly overawed by the large crowd, all firmly behind the Spaniard who stormed off to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Almagro’s serve was firing on all cylinders (as it has been all week), gunning down 10 aces. Korolev didn’t serve badly either, making 65% 1st serves but Almagro played the key points to perfection, he only had 3 break point chances but took them all. He eased off the gas towards the end of the 2nd but Korolev never realistically looked like breaking back
Looking ahead to Sunday’s showpiece, Almagro was keen to emphasize how tough a match it could be. “Tomorrow will be a huge final. David is a good friend of mine,” he said. “He fights throughout the match, runs very well, doesn't miss much. I will need to be very solid from the back to be able to win.”
