David Ferrer has been intent on creating a passable impression of Houdini this week, the top seed joins a list of players who’ve won ATP titles this year after being down match point.
The top seed displayed his renowned fighting qualities yet again today to make it title no 6, defeating Nicholas Almagro 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(3), meaning that his compatriot’s hopes of a hat-trick of Valencia titles were dashed at the final hurdle. It’s a very bitter pill for Almagro to swallow especially having served for the title twice at 5-2 and then 5-4 in the final set and many fans left the arena afterwards still wondering how he didn’t win ! He powered down 11 aces throughout the match but couldn’t find those big serves when he needed them most
For Ferrer, it’s amends for the last time he was in the Valencia final, 3 years ago when he lost a close 3 setter to Igor Andreev and at many times today tt looked to be slipping away from him again. The first set was well-contested but the stylish Almagro always looked on top. He broke to go 2-1 up and really outclassed Ferrer in a lot of the rallies, particularly in the cross-court backhand exchanges where Almagro always held the upper hand. Ferrer dug deep to keep it close, saving 2 set points at 3-5 but Almagro closed it out in the next game
Set 2 was a complete turnaround, Ferrer reeled off 4 straight games from 2-2 aided by a double fault from Almagro handing him the first break. However, he completely lost his way in the 3rd set and Almagro looked to have it all wrapped up at 5-2 before Ferrer battled back to leave the 5th seed wondering what might have been
“Today I lost to a big champion. David is a fantastic player,” conceded Almagro. “I had the title so close. I feel like someone stole the title from me. I feel like the champion for the week I had, for the attitude I showed this week.”
Ferrer paid tribute to the strong support he received throughout the week, as Valencia is his main base, this is a special tournament for him. ”It was the toughest tournament of my life. By one point I could have been in Monte-Carlo now. (He saved match points against Verdasco on Friday). If it wasn't for the crowd I would not have won it here.“
