Adrian Mannarino has played well above himself all week and even though the run came to an end in the semifinals, he gave Paul-Henri Mathieu a severe scare.
Mathieu eked it out in the end 7-6(8), 7-6(4) and there was just five points between them when it was all said and done. It's Mathieu's first final of the year, and he always seems to rise to the occasion indoors.
As for Mannarino, he's now guaranteed a massive ranking rise and the race will be on to try and secure direct entry for the 2009 Australian Open. He was extremely impressive in the final qualifying round, taking out Florent Serra, but no one expected him to stun No. 6 seed Andreas Seppi in the first round and it's just continued from there. He's put himself very much in contention for a wildcard to next month's Paris Masters as well.
Both players broke twice in the match but neither could consolidate and experience prevailed in two very tight tiebreaks.
Mathieu must now aim for a top 16 place by the end of the year, those few extra ranking points can make all the difference when it comes to the Slam draws as he's seen this year, making the fourth round three times.
