It was predicted to go to the wire and Radek Stepanek and Michael Llodra didn't disappoint with a thriller.
Stepanek eventually pulled through 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 after just over two hours. It was a fine recovery from the Czech, who saw 19 aces fly past him during the match. He could arguably have wrapped up the match a little easier in the decider, taking just one of seven break points, but the tiebreak was never in doubt as Stepanek raced through it 7-0.
No. 4 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu was never troubled by compatriot Romain Jouan, taking it 6-3, 6-3. The Frenchman has been in a slump all summer and is clearly delighted to get back on the indoor circuit. “I prefer to play earlier during the day, since I always feel like I have more energy in the afternoon,” he said. “I'm happy to be playing well again after a difficult period during the summer.”
Qualifier Adrian Mannarino is now through to the last eight, beating Rik De Voest 6-4, 7-5. The world No. 181 has been dominant on the Futures tour (the third tier of men's tennis) this season, but this spectacular transition onto the main circuit is completely unexpected.
Victor Hanescu will be feeling a little robbed right now after losing 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 to Edwardo Schwank. The Romanian had all the chances but failed to take any of 11 break points en route to defeat.
