Paul-Henri Mathieu ensured an all French semi-final yesterday by dispatching Janko Tipsarevic in a close quarter-final.
Just 1 break was needed to decide the match, going to the Frenchman in set 2 as Mathieu closed things out 7-6, 6-3. Mathieu's strong serving proved vital to his success with 12 aces. There were very few chances for either man in the first set and it was clear that whoever won that would have a potentially decisive psychological advantage going into set 2. Mathieu was the one able to hold his nerve right at the death, taking the tiebreak 7-4.
Mathieu admitted afterwards that there'd been very little between him and Tipsarevic, “It was a very close match today. Two or three points decided the match.”
He'll be hoping it's second time lucky today having lost in the Metz semis 4 years ago to another Frenchman, Jerome Haehnel.
The story of the week though has been Adrian Mannarino. The Frenchman had just started moving onto challengers a few months ago but now it looks as if it won't be long before he's another French main tour regular, adding to their considerable strength in depth. The 20 year old took out experienced compatriot Marc Gicquel 6-4, 7-6. Mannarino has incredible court coverage ability which makes him very difficult to break down even indoors.
