Alexandr Dolgopolov overcomes Marcos Baghdatis in a second-round battle on Wednesday in Metz. Arnaud Clement also advances with a straight-set upset of Michael Llodra.
(3) Alexandr Dolgopolov d. Marcos Baghdatis 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3
Dolgopolov needed two hours and 20 minutes to get past Baghdatis in a marquee second-round matchup at the Moselle Open on Wednesday night. Baghdatis got off to a hot start and broke serve in the second game of the match en route to a 3-0 advantage. The Cypriot gave it back but recovered to take the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to five.
Seemingly on the way to an early exit from Metz, Dolgopolov faced three break points at 3-3 in the second. When he saved all three and held, however, the tide turned. Dolgopolov eventually broke at 6-5 to win the set on a missed backhand volley by Baghdatis and the No. 3 seed never looked back. He broke right away for a 2-0 lead in the second and served things out the rest of the way. Dolgopolov now awaits either Xavier Malisse or Igor Kunitsyn.
(WC) Arnaud Clement d. (5) Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-4
Clement continued his dominance of Llodra, beating his favored countryman for the fourth time in four tries on Wednesday evening in Metz. The 33-year-old came out strong despite serving poorly in the first set and he saved the only break point he faced during his first five service games. One break of his own allowed Clement to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-3.
After a pair of breaks were exchanged early in the second, Clement made the decisive move with a scalp of Llodra's serve at 3-3. The 34th-ranked Frenchman had no answer, unable to get any looks in his final two return games. Clement wrapped up the proceedings with a love hold at 5-4, setting up another all-French showdown against Nicolas Mahut after one hour and 19 minutes.
