  • Tsonga outlasts Mahut to reach Moselle Open semis

    9/23/11 8:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battles past Nicolas Mahut in three tight sets on Friday in Metz. Tsonga is through to the semifinals along with Gilles Muller.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won an all-French thriller against Nicolas Mahut on Friday night at the Moselle Open, advancing to the semifinals with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Tsonga needed two hours and two minutes to set up a clash against either Alexandr Dolgopolov or Xavier Malisse.

Mahut got off to a strong start and had visions of an upset after breaking at 2-2 in the first set. The world No. 92 did not face a single break point as he served out the opening frame of play and he dropped only six points in five service games.

Tsonga powered his way back into the match with a break--at love--in the sixth game of the second set. However, that did not come before Mahut had two break chances to take a commanding lead. Having survived the scare, Tsonga served out the set the rest of the way while winning 17 of 18 first-serve points.

A tight third set saw both men continue to play well in all aspects of the game, especially on serve. Neither player got a look at a single break chance until Tsonga caught fire when it mattered most at 5-5. Metz's top seed hit four consecutive winners--including two first-serve returns--for a love break before serving out the proceedings in routine fashion.

Tsonga finished with 20 aces while winning 83 percent of his first-serve points. Mahut recorded seven aces and--like his opponent--tossed in three double-faults.

The world No. 10 is joined in Saturday's semifinals by Gilles Muller, a straight-set winner over second-seeded Richard Gasquet. Muller fired 11 aces and saved all six of the break points he faced to advance. The Luxembourgian saved a total of five break points in his last two service games to clinch victory.
