Tsonga rolls, Mahut overcomes Clement
9/23/11 1:44 AM | Ricky Dimon
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins his Metz opener in straight sets over Mathieu Rodrigues on Thursday. Tsonga is joined in the quarterfinals by Nicolas Mahut, a three-set winner against Arnaud Clement.
(1) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. (Q) Mathieu Rodrigues 6-3, 6-4
Tsonga kicked off his Moselle Open campaign by ending Rodrigues' impressive week after one hour and 16 minutes on Thursday night. Rodrigues, who qualified for the main draw then beat Mikhail Kukushkin for his first ATP-level victory, did well to make this one respectable. The underdog donated serve just once in the opening set, but that was one too many times because Tsonga lost only six points in five service games.
With momentum in hand, Tsonga broke immediately in the second for a 1-0 advantage. The 10th-ranked Frenchman would go on to lose serve for the first time all day, but he never let his compatriot completely back into the match. Tsonga wrapped up the proceedings with a hold at 5-4 to set up a quarterfinal showdown against another Frenchman, Nicolas Mahut.
Nicolas Mahut d. (WC) Arnaud Clement 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
Another all-French affair saw Mahut battle past Clement in a thriller that lasted two hours and 30 minutes. Clement had already taken out one countryman--Michael Llodra--this week, and he seemed to be on the way to doing it again after an impressive first set. The 33-year-old broke serve for a quick 2-0 advantage and saved all six of the break points he faced throughout the opening frame of play.
After a pair of breaks were exchanged early in the second, Mahut struck when it mattered most at 5-6. The world No. 92 capitalized on his third break chance of the game to force a decisive third set. Having taken control, Mahut broke for a 2-0 lead and never looked back. He won 17 of his last 19 first-serve points and did not face a single break point in the final set as he clinched a big victory. Mahut finished with 15 aces to Clement's 11.
