  • Marseille - Simon’s return cut short

    Gilles Simon’s return to the ATP tour was abbreviated at the hands of Belgium’s Olivier Rochus. No. 8 seed Julien Benneteau advanced to the second round.

    France’s Gilles Simon, ranked 16 in the world, did not play a match in 2010 coming into Marseille. His rust was apparent especially in the second set. The Frenchman fought in the first set. He faced a host of break points, 9 in total, but he was able to fend off 7 of them. Rochus only managed to clinch the set-winning break at the tail-end of the set.

    The wind went out of Simon’s sails after the first set loss. He crumbled at the big moments; he surrendered 3 breaks of serve. Rochus actually held him to a single game won on serve – Simon’s other game in the set came on a service break.

    Julien Benneteau def. Stephane Bohli 7-6(5), 7-6(3)

    In a surprisingly tight opening round match, Switzerland’s Stephane Bohli took No. 8 seed Julien Benneteau of France to 2 tiebreak sets. Both men were tough on serve. There were no service breaks and only 3 total break point chances in the entire match. Bohli in particular served well. The Swiss man kicked in an impressive 14 aces for the match.

    Benneteau’s experience saw him through both tiebreaks. The Frenchman secured the win after just over 2 hours of play. He will take on countryman Florent Serra in the second round.
