Stanislas Wawrinka sent crowd favourite Sebastien Grosjean packing with a tight 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win late this evening.
Afte alsor going out of the doubles earlier in the day with Mario Ancic, it’s not a day Grosjean will look back on with any great fondness.
It was a high quality match with chances few and far between. Wawrinka struggled to get a handle on the Grosjean first serve in set 1, winning just 1 point against it. Grosjean is so good at using the serve to open up the angles for the next shot, and was typically clinical in that respect tonight. He took both break point chances on the Wawrinka serve and despite having not done too much wrong, the Swiss found himself a set down.
Into the second and Wawrinka began to get more of a hold on the Grosjean serve, making the most of the few looks he got at a 2nd serve and forcing 4 break points, converting just 1 but that proved enough to take it into a decider.
With both players displaying classic one-two punch skills and solid volleying technique on the quick Marseille courts, it all came down to a couple of points. The Swiss player’s punishing groundstrokes forced an error on his 2nd break point and he sealed another encounter with Britain’s Andy Murray, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Jesse Huta-Galung earlier in the day.
