Serbia’s Novak Djokovic looked to take another step toward the medal round on Tuesday in his second round match with Rainer Schuettler of Germany.
The focus in the past few months has not been on Novak Djokovic. Rafael Nadal and to a lesser extent Roger Federer has stolen the spotlight. Nadal, of course, has taken the number one ranking from Federer after four years of domination from the Swiss man. Nadal snagged the Wimbledon trophy from Federer, then won the Masters event in Toronto. And in the background has been Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic is ahead of Federer in the ATP race points, second behind Nadal, but he has not won a tournament since the beginning of May at the Rome Masters; he is looking for a big result at the Beijing Olympics. He is off to a good start.
Rainer Schuettler was able to hang with Djokovic for the first set. The Serb closed out the set 6-4 up a single break over Schuettler. The second set was all Djokovic. Schuettler legs looked heavy and the German spent the set being bullied around the back court by Djokovic’s ground strokes. Djokovic will face the hard-hitting Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the third round.
Solid play from Djokovic sees him, and the other top seeds, safely through to the third round.
Schuettler's legs showed their age, especially in the second set.
