The 2007 Nottingham champion, Ivo Karlovic advances to the quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Sam Querrey.
The Croatian serving machine Ivo Karlovic smacked 27 aces in his two set victory over American Sam Querrey on Wednesday.
As expected, this match was decided in tie-breakers. Most of Karlovic's matches are like that due to the fact that he has the best serve on the ATP tour and few players can string together enough points to actually break him.
Sam Querrey was left befuddled as how to get a bead on the Croat's serve. Rafael Nadal, when he played Karlovic at Queen's Club, began employing the tactic of guessing which side Karlovic would to to - he was right often enough to win two of the three tiebreakers in their quarter-final match. Querrey had no such success.
Karlovic seemed to fire aces past Querrey at will, making the match one giant frustration for the American. Querrey faced two break points, but staved them off. Querrey had four set points in the second set tiebreaker, but failed to convert as the were on Karlovic's serve. Karlovic now extends his Nottingham record to 9-1. He faces Italy's Andreas Seppi in the quarter-finals.
