Spain's Fernando Verdasco showed good grass court acumen in defeating Gilles Simon to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Verdasco is known to most tennis fans as a clay courter. His excellent retrieving skills took him to the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Unfortunately for Verdasco, he ran into an on-fire Rafael Nadal who decimated him in three sets. A semifinal appearance on grass is an excellent result for Verdasco.
His match against Simon was a strange affair. The Frenchman served at a dismal 42% in the first set. Verdasco was quite happy to take advantage of Simon's weakness; the Spaniard broke Simon twice, but was not even pressed on his own serve.
The second set saw the match flip flop completely. Verdasco struggled mightily to get his first serve in. And this time it was Simon who was able to take control. Verdasco was broken three times out of four service games.
Both men played better and more evenly in the third set. A single break of serve for Verdasco would decide the match.
Verdasco plays the promising youngster Marin Cilic in the semifinals.
