  • Isner and Raonic advance in Newport

    7/11/12 3:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Top seed John Isner and No. 3 Milos Raonic moved into the second round at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

    John Isner (1) def. Sergei Bubka 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3

Defending Newport champion John Isner got off to a winning start on Tuesday with a three-set win over the Ukraine’s Sergei Bubka. This wasn’t a slam dunk for Isner. The American served well in the first set, but he didn’t make a dent with his return game and even after serving up 12 aces he needed a tiebreaker to take the lead.

Bubka got the first break of serve in the second set, with the Ukrainian converting on one of two chances to level the match at a set apiece. It wasn’t until the third set that Isner finally got his own service break to seal the match win.

Isner’s win sets up a second-round encounter with Nicolas Mahut, a rematch of the longest match in tennis history that the two played at Wimbledon in 2010.

    Milos Raonic (3) def. Matthew Ebden 3-6, 6-3, 7-5

Milos Raonic, ranked 23rd in the world, took a while to get warmed up. The big server put in eight aces in the first set but world No. 80 Matthew Ebden of Australia was still able to get a service break to take the set lead.

That break would be the last sniff Ebden would have of the Raonic serve. The Canadian didn’t face another break point the rest of the way and ended up with 26 aces for the match.

Raonic will take on Benjamin Becker in the second round.
