  • Newport - Isner advances, Sela knocks out Querrey

    7/12/12 3:28 AM | Cheryl Murray
John Isner added another win to his record over Nicolas Mahut in Newport on Wednesday, while compatriot Sam Querrey went down to Dudi Sela.

John Isner (1) def. Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 7-6(2)

American John Isner is one step closer to defending his Newport title from 2011 with a straight-set victory over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. After their record-breaking 70-68 fifth set at Wimbledon, this match was docile.

Isner secured the first set easily, snagging a pair of service breaks while not facing a single break point on his own serve.

Mahut picked up the pace in the second set. The Frenchman staved off three break points to keep pace with Isner and force the seemingly-inevitable tiebreaker, but Isner continued to be the better player and he dominated the 'breaker to win in straight sets.

Dudi Sela def. Sam Querrey 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-2

After putting up a good grass-court season in Europe, including a semifinal showing at Queen's Club, American Sam Querrey faltered badly at Newport.

This match had a surprising number of service breaks. Between Querrey and Israel's Dudi Sela, there were nine breaks in the match. The difference for the Israeli is that Querrey played poorly on nearly all of the important points of the match, including a dismal one for six on breaks points saved.

Sela snagged the momentum in the match after stealing the second set tiebreaker out from underneath Querrey and ran through the third set for the upset win.
