  • Harrison and Isner set up semifinal showdown with wins on Friday

    7/14/12 12:53 AM | Cheryl Murray
Americans Ryan Harrison and John Isner closed out their quarterfinal matches to set up a meeting in Saturday's semi-final.

Ryan Harrison (6) def. Benjamin Becker 6-4, 3-0

No. 6 seed Ryan Harrison got the easy path to the semifinals. The American was already playing well and up a set after taking the first 6-4 when German opponent Benjamin Becker took a medical time out.

The German made an attempt to continue in the second set, but after getting broken twice and failing to break Harrison after earning three break points, he conceded the match.

This will be the second semifinal on grass for Harrison his year; the American also made the semis in Eastbourne.

John Isner (1) def. Izak Van der Merwe 6-4, 7-6(2)

John Isner is now two matches away from repeating as Newport champion. The American struck 12 aces in his straight set victory over South Africa’s Izak Van der Merwe.

The top seed had a good serving day all the way around, putting in 72% of his first serves and facing little pressure from the Van der Merwe return. Isner fought off the two break points against him.

Isner's return game wasn’t very effective. He secured just one break of the South African's serve in the first set and not at all in the second, but his serve carried him through the tiebreaker without trouble.
