  • Gulbis wins in Munich, Youzhny defeats Petzschner

    5/1/12 7:02 PM | Ricky Dimon
Ernests Gulbis gets his first win in a tournament since February as he beats Xavier Malisse in straight sets on Tuesday in Munich. Gulbis is joined in the second round by Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Philipp Petzschner.

    Ernests Gulbis d. Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2

Gulbis struck six aces and never dropped serve as he defeated Malisse in one hour and 22 minutes during first-round action at the BMW Open on Tuesday. The Latvian had lost five consecutive matches in ATP events prior to his arrival in Munich, but he saved all three of the break points he faced while winning 80 percent of his first-serve points to control this clash from start to finish.

Malisse fought off five of six break points in the opening set to stay competitive, but he disappeared in the second. The 31-year-old Belgian fell behind by two breaks quickly due to an immense struggle on second-serve points. Gulbis closed out the proceedings on serve at 5-2 to set up a second-round meeting with No. 4 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

    (6) Mikhail Youzhny d. Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 7-5

Youzhny gave back breaks in each set but managed to recover and hold off Petzschner in straight sets on Tuesday afternoon in Munich. The Russian took control right away, racing to a 4-0 advantage in the first set. However, Petzschner returned the favor and won four straight games of his own the get back on level terms. Youzhny regained the momentum at 6-5, converting another break with a big forehand return on set point.

The No. 6 seed went up by a break in the second with a winner off the net cord at 3-2. This time Petzschner got back on serve immediately with his third break of the day before holding for 4-4. But it was deja vu for the German, who once again buckled amidst the pressure of a service game at 5-6. Petzschner saved one match point but dumped a volley in the net at ad-out to end his chances. Next up for Youzhny is Santiago Giraldo.
