  • Kohlschreiber takes care of Gulbis, Tomic advances

    5/3/12 6:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Philipp Kohlschreiber beats Ernests Gulbis in straight sets on Thursday in Munich. Kohlschreiber is joined in the quarterfinals by Bernard Tomic, a three-set winner over Potito Starace.

    (4) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 6-3

Kohlschreiber fired six aces without double-faulting and he never dropped serve as he advanced to the quarterfinals of the BMW Open on Thursday evening. One break late in each set was enough for Kohlschreiber to prevail in one hour and 37 minutes. Gulbis battled relatively well and saved four break points in his second service game at 1-2 in the first set, but he double-faulted on set point at 5-6 to put himself in a hole.

A more comfortable second set saw Kohlschreiber break at 4-3, also courtesy of a Gulbis double-fault. The fourth-seeded German then served out the match at love, punctuating the victory with a service winner. Kohlschreiber's only real trouble spot came at 4-4 in the opening set, when he saved Gulbis' lone break point of the match with a winner off the net cord. Next up for the world No. 34 is Marinko Matosevic.

    (5) Bernard Tomic d. Potito Starace 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3

Tomic booked a place in the Munich quarterfinals after battling past Starace in two hours and four minutes on Thursday. The 19-year-old Australian dominated the first set but found himself trailing by a break early in the second. Starace gave the break back at 4-2 and was pushed to a tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth 'breaker, the competitors took multiple turns going up by mini-breaks before Starace took control.

With momentum in hand, the Italian broke immediately in the third en route to a 2-0 lead. Starace even had a break point in the third game to go up by two breaks, but Tomic saved it and that turned the tide. The world No. 33 broke back for 2-2, broke again 4-3, then served out the match with ease to clinch victory. Tomic awaits either Feliciano Lopez or Sergiy Stakhovsky.
