Juan Monaco, the number three seed and one of the tournament favorites, survived a scare on Wednesday as he staved off Martin Vassallo Arguello in a tight three set match.
The first set was routine for Monaco; he did not face a single break point on his own serve and was able to break the serve of his countrymen once before comfortably closing out the set at 6-3.
The second set was a different story altogether. Suddenly, Vassallo Arguello was moving better and hitting better than his compatriot. He put pressure on the Monaco serve and was rewarded with eight break opportunities. Vassallo Arguello would eventually be broken once, but he broke Monaco twice and took the second set rather easily at 6-4.
Both players traded breaks early in the third set. Monaco still seemed out of sorts and he looked uncomfortable in both his movement and his strokes. Serving to even the set at 4-5, Monaco suddenly found himself in a 15-40 hole. Vassallo Arguello had two match points, which Monaco saved to get the game to deuce. Vassallo Arguello would have another opportunity, getting to ad in the deuce game, but again Monaco denied him. After a struggle, Monaco eventually held serve. Vassallo Arguello seemed to deflate after so many missed opportunities and was immediately broken in the next game. Monaco served the match out, taking the third set 7-5. Next up for Monaco is Juan Brzezicki.
