  • Berdych advances, Karlovic outlasts Petzschner

    8/10/11 9:17 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tomas Berdych takes out Alexandr Dolgopolov in three sets on Wednesday in Montreal. Berdych is joined in the third round by Ivo Karlovic, who beat Philipp Petzschner in a third-set tiebreaker.

    (7) Tomas Berdych d. Alexandr Dolgopolov 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

For the second time in as many years at the Rogers Cup, Berdych scored a three-set win over Dolgopolov to advance. Having defeated Dolgpolov in last season's third round, Berdych booked his spot in round three this time after prevailing in two hours and minutes. The 22-year-old Ukrainian got off to a fast start, dictating play from the back of the court and seizing a pair of breaks in set one. That allowed Dolgopolov to close out the opening frame of play on serve at 5-4.

From there, however, the tide turned. Berdych earned two breaks of his own in the second and dropped a mere four points in four service games. A Dolgopolov double-fault at 2-5 ended the set and Berdych maintained his momentum in the third, although not without difficulty. Dolgopolov actually won five more return points in the set than his opponent, but one poor service game at 2-3 doomed the world No. 21's chances. Berdych fought off one break point at 5-3 and held to set up a clash against Ivo Karlovic.

    Ivo Karlovic d. (Q) Philipp Petzschner d. 6-7(0), 7-6(2), 7-6(6)

Not surprisingly, Karlovic and Petzschner played three tiebreakers and it was Karlovic who prevailed after two hours and 54 minutes on Wednesday in Montreal. Not a single break took place throughout the first and second sets, both of which ended in dominant 'breakers. Petzschner took the opener without losing a single point, but Karlovic forced a third by easing through the second tiebreaker seven points to two.

The German seemed to have victory in hand when he seized the day's first break at 2-2. Shockingly, however, Petzschner gave the break right back and Karlovic had a second life. Back in with a chance, Karlovic served his way into a final tiebreaker and never trailed. The 6'10'' Croat gave back mini-breaks on multiple occasions and squandered multiple match points--including on his own serve--but recovered just in time. A clinching return point at 7-6 ended the marathon in Karlovic's favor. Petzschner finished with nine aces but he double-faulted seven times, while Karlovic fired 17 aces in his victory.
