Janko Tipsarevic takes out Tomas Berdych in straight sets on Friday in Montreal. Tipsarevic is through to the semifinals for a date with Mardy Fish.
After all the carnage in Montreal, it only seemed appropriate that an unseeded player would reach the semifinals. That player turned out to be Janko Tipsarevic.
Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer--among many others--all fell by the wayside. Tipsarevic did not have to beat any of them, but he did benefit from Nadal's departure in the bottom quarter of the draw. The Serb capitalized on his opportunity on Thursday by dismissing Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Rogers Cup quarterfinals.
Tipsarevic took care of his serve from start to finish in this one, and that paced him to taking a tight first set. The world No. 24 saved all four of the break points he faced and a crucial break of his own at 4-4 proved to be the difference. Tipsarevic then closed out the opening frame of play in style with a routine hold.
For Berdych, one donation of serve also doomed his chances in the second. The ninth-ranked Czech, who has reach seven quarterfinals this season but has now lost at that stage on six of those occasions, never could get back on serve. Tipsarevic wrapped up his solid effort with one more commanding hold at 5-4.
Berdych finished with five aces and four double-faults. Tipsarevic recorded 10 aces and double-faulted three times while winning 82 percent of his first-serve points.
