Tomas Berdych is the first man through to the Montreal quarterfinals as he dismisses Ivo Karlovic in straight sets on Thursday. Berdych awaits either Janko Tipsarevic or Ivan Dodig.
Tomas Berdych beat Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-6(2) in the third round of the Rogers Cup on Thursday afternoon. Berdych played tough on the big points and set up a quarterfinal clash against either Janko Tipsarevic or Ivan Dodig after one hour and 42 minutes of play.
Karlovic won both of his first two matches in third-set tiebreakers--over Juan Monaco and Philipp Petzschner--and he looked sluggish at the beginning of this one. Berdych seized an early break in the opening set and that was all he would need. The ninth-ranked Czech fought off two break points despite having a brutal time with his second-serve points and he closed out the proceedings with a hold at 6-3.
Both men came up with clutch serves to stay toe-to-toe in a tighter second set. Berdych fought off two chances early before Karlovic survived a trio of break points late in the set to keep his chances alive. The favorite found himself trailing 0-30 at 5-6 only to storm back and hold to force a tiebreaker.
Once in the 'breaker, however, Karlovic finally gave out. The 6'10'' Croat dropped four service points, including the final two at 2-5 and 2-6 thanks to stellar returns from Berdych.
Berdych wrapped up his effort with 10 aces and just one double-fault while Karlovic cracked 12 aces and double-faulted four times. Montreal's No. 7 seed is through to his seventh quarterfinal of the season.
