Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka had a mid-match glitch, but in the end he got past big-serving South African Kevin Anderson.
The Swiss No. 2 seems to be over his slump. Stanislas Wawrinka had a dismal grass court season complete with a terrible second round loss to Simone Bolelli at Wimbledon. Wawrinka is back now though, with an excellent chance to get into the Montreal semifinals.
Kevin Anderson, who took out Andy Murray in the second round, managed to snag the middle set from Wawrinka. The Swiss man won the first set with a single service break and he fought off the only break point against him. Anderson made a match of it in the second set, however.
The South African faced down 4 break points and converted the only break point chance he earned to level the match at a set a piece.
Wawrinka’s serve ultimately won the match for him. He picked the level of his serving up noticeably in the third set. The effort paid off; Anderson did not earn a single break point chance, while Wawrinka converted 1 of 2 for the victory.
