Roger Federer suffered a second consecutive loss to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as the Frenchman put on a Masters class for the upset.
Roger Federer just barely avoided a third set bagel in another tough loss to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Despite losing the middle set, Tsonga spent most of the match dominating from the baseline.
The world No. 3 stayed relevant in this match thanks in large part to his serve. Federer made it through the entire first set without facing a single break point. But because he couldn’t break Tsonga’s serve, Federer was forced to play out the set in a tiebreak. Unfortunately for the Swiss man, Tsonga rose to the challenge to take the lead.
Federer served well in the second set. Tsonga had a trio of break point chances, but Federer was able to hold him off each time. The Frenchman served at just 50% in the middle frame, which Federer took advantage of with his lone service break of the match.
With the second set lost, Tsonga buckled down and immediately snagged a break from Federer. From that point on in the match, the Frenchman played magnificent tennis. He sent half-volleys at Federer’s shoelaces and passed the Swiss man at will. At 0-3, Federer showed some signs of life. Tsonga earned himself 2 break points, only to have Federer serve his way out of trouble.
Unfortunately for the Federer camp, Tsonga kept his head. Two brilliant shots from the Frenchman, including an almost impossible get gave Tsonga the double break anyway.
Federer held just one time, but Tsonga was simply unstoppable.
