Tsonga, Gasquet lead French charge in Montreal

Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet moved on with continued success in Montreal, with the Davis Cup teammates each advancing in straight sets.
Richard Gasquet (10) def. Thomaz Bellucci 6-1, 6-4
World No. 13 Richard Gasquet once again overcame a slightly low first service percentage to score an easy win at the Canadian Open. In his opening round match, the Frenchman served at 53%, today at 52%, but it didn’t seem to make a difference to the results. Neither Florian Mayer nor Thomaz Bellucci was able to capitalize.
Gasquet, whose match went untelevised, had to fight off 3 break points. He saved each, further proof that his on-court mentality is finally finding purchase.
Gasquet will take on another clay courter, Nicolas Almagro, in the third round.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (13) def. Bernard Tomic (WC) 6-3, 7-6(1)
Despite a last second set hiccup, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was able to get past up-and-coming Bernard Tomic in straight sets.
The Frenchman started off playing well. His pace of shot off the forehand wing, and especially his serve was too much for Tomic to handle. Tsonga hit 5 aces in the first set, but he only lost 4 points on serve, a testament to Tomic’s difficulty on the return.
Tomic kept up with Tsonga better in the second set. As the set wore on, the Frenchman’s forehand found the net too many times; the Australian managed to break and even served for the set at 6-5. The Frenchman’s experience came to his aid. Tsonga broke back to force a tiebreaker, which he dominated.
Tsonga’s win sets up a third round showdown with none other than Roger Federer, who he took out in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
