Gasquet destroys Mayer, Stakhovsky upends Kohlschreiber
8/9/11 8:43 PM | Cheryl Murray
Richard Gasquet made an emphatic start to his 2011 Montreal campaign with a convincing straight set victory over Florian Mayer.
Richard Gasquet (10) def. Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2
France’s Richard Gasquet is just a few spots away from being in the ATP top 10 again. The Frenchman is now 13 in the world, up from a low of 86 last May.
Florian Mayer could have been a tough opponent. The two men had a lengthy Davis Cup match that Gasquet won in 5 sets just a few weeks ago. But on Tuesday, Mayer was no match for the Frenchman.
Gasquet played a fantastic second round match. He served well when he needed to, hit clean from the baseline and took advantage of 3 of the 6 break points he earned. Mayer had 5 chances to break the Frenchman, twice in the first set and three times in the second, but Gasquet held on each time.
Sergiy Stakhovsky def. Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 7-5
Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber’s woes continued on Tuesday with a straight-set loss to the Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky.
The German has been slowly sliding down the rankings from a career high of No. 22 back in 2009 with increasing difficulty fronting up at big tournaments.
Kohlschreiber’s biggest problem on Tuesday was his inability to serve well. The German put in an anemic 48% of first serves in, which resulted in a trio of service breaks for Stakhovsky. Compounding things for Kohlschreiber was his inability to convert on his own earned break points. The Ukrainian fought off each of the 5 break points against him. Stakhovsky will face No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro in round 2.
