Philipp Petzschner pulls off a first-round upset in Montreal by defeating Gilles Simon on Tuesday. Petzschner is now set for a big-serving clash against Ivo Karlovic.
Philipp Petzschner continued his solid run at the Rogers Cup and booked a spot in the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Gilles Simon on Tuesday afternoon. Petzschner, who had to qualify just to get into the main draw, advanced after one hour and 29 minutes of play.
The German seemed to take control right from the start, but his only hiccup of the match made the first set more interesting than necessary. After an early break, Petzschner cruised to a 5-3 advantage while losing hardly any points on his own serve. Suddenly, however, he donated serve at love with a chance to close out the opening frame of play at 5-4. Nonetheless, Petzschner broke right back and this time he finished things off with ease at 6-5.
Simon did not quite go away entirely in the second, but he continued to struggle on big points. The 11th-ranked Frenchman squandered seven break chances in set two, so two breaks for Petzschner were more than enough to close out the proceedings in style. A clinching hold at 5-2 allowed the world No. 80 to set up a showdown with Ivo Karlovic.
Petzschner recorded five aces and two double-faults while winning 82 percent of his first-serve points. Simon wrapped up his effort with two aces and five doubles, and he was done in by 46 percent serving.
