Wawrinka and Anderson into round 2 in Montreal
8/8/11 10:45 PM | Cheryl Murray
Stanislas Wawrinka scored a comfortable first round victory over veteran Argentine David Nalbandian, where he will be joined by South African Kevin Anderson.
Stanislas Wawrinka (14) def. David Nalbandian 6-1, 6-4
The first set of this opening round match was well-played by Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. The No. 14 seed took advantage of a clearly uninspired David Nalbandian to hold the Argentine to just one game. Nalbandian’s serve in particular let him down. He only put in 44% of his first serves in the box, and even those that went in were weak-looking.
Wawrinka appeared poised to run through the second set as well. The Swiss man had a 4-1 lead only to get a little tight himself. Nalbandian managed to claw his way back to 4-5 and even had chances to get back on serve, but it was not to be. Wawrinka will take on the winner of Michael Russell and Albert Montanes.
Kevin Anderson def. Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-4
Big-serving South African Kevin Anderson had little difficulty in his first round showdown with Pablo Andujar. In fact, the only surprise in the match was that Andujar actually managed to break Anderson’s serve in the second set.
Anderson struck 11 aces on the day, a relatively modest total for the Johannesburg champion. The South African has one of the biggest serves on the men’s circuit. Fortunately for Anderson, he was able to break Andujar’s serve twice to keep things simple on day 1 of play.
Next up for Anderson is defending Canadian Open champion Andy Murray.
