Novak Djokovic, who has only lost one match in 2011, added the Montreal trophy to his growing list of accomplishments this season.
This was not Novak Djokovic at his best, but in the end the Serbian world No. 1 did what was necessary to keep Mardy Fish from the Canadian Open crown.
Fish, the top American at No. 8 in the world, had plenty of chances to break Djokovic’s serve in the opening set. Fish had 5 chances to break Djokovic’s serve, but he failed on each attempt. Compounding the problem for the American was a horrendous first percentage of 35%. For the best returner in the game today, the first set was a flat-out gift.
Djokovic’s quality of play deteriorated a bit in the second set. Fish was able to dictate play with his forehand with the reward of a pair of service breaks.
The Serb buckled down to work in the decider. A loose service game from Fish gave Djokovic the early lead, which he held onto through 5-4 with the Serb serving for the match.
Djokovic had 40-0 and three match points. To the delight of the crowd, Fish saved 3 match points to earn a deuce. Unfortunately for the American his forehand, which gave him trouble for much of the third set, let him down at the worst possible moment. The American donated an unforced error to the Djokovic cause with a forehand that sailed 3 feet beyond the baseline. Djokovic didn’t make a mistake on his fourth match point.
Both Fish and Djokovic will head to Cincinnati immediately to put in the last big tournament before the US Open.
