American Mardy Fish continues his impressive run on the summer hard courts. The Atlanta champion made his way to the Montreal semis with a win over Stanislas Wawrinka.
Stanislas Wawrinka played a diabolically poor match on Friday against American Mardy Fish. That Fish joined in the horror in the middle set allowed the match to extend to three sets.
In 2 hours and 21 minutes, a combined total of 28 (!) break point chances were earned. For the most part, the first set was the least horrible. Wawrinka was dreadful on the serve, getting broken in 3 of his 5 service games, but Fish was in relatively good form, surrendering just 1 break.
The middle set was the crown jewel of the disaster. A tiebreaker ensued, but only after each man surrendered 4 breaks of serve each. Fish, who usually has a solid serve, inexplicably fell apart. He gave Wawrinka 11 looks; that the Swiss man only converted 4 of them was hardly a credit to the American. That Wawrinka was able to win a set playing as badly as he did is nothing short of amazing.
Fish righted the ship for the third set, while Wawrinka continued to flounder. The Swiss man did not manage to save a single of Fish’s 3 break points and wound up with a bagel to show for his efforts.
Fish will take on Janko Tipsarevic in the semifinals.
