8/11/11 2:26 PM | Cheryl Murray
After a rain delay and waiting 3 hours for Ivan Dodig and Rafael Nadal, Mardy Fish and Feliciano Lopez finally got on court for their second round match.
Spain’s Feliciano Lopez already went into this match at a serious disadvantage. Not only did the world No. 25 need 3 sets to dispatch of Radek Stepanek in the first round, but the men were unable to finish their match on Tuesday. Lopez was forced to complete his first round match Wednesday afternoon and come back on Wednesday night to take on Fish.
There was some anticipation going into this encounter. The two men had met weeks prior in the Davis Cup quarterfinal with Lopez just edging world No. 8 Fish in 5 tight sets. There was no such drama this time around.
Fish needed just 1 hour and 9 minutes to finish off Lopez. The American served up 9 aces and earned a whopping 10 break point chances against the Spaniard.
Lopez fought off all but 3, but without any breaks of the Fish serve to show for his efforts, the match ended quickly. Fish will take on Ernests Gulbis in the third round.
