American Mardy Fish is into the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open with a win over resurgent Latvian Ernests Gulbis.
This was an entertaining third round match, if not always the highest quality, with most of the drama coming in the third set.
Fish paid the price in the opening set for his dismal first serve percentage. Gulbis served at an efficient 77%, which kept Fish locked out of each of his service games. The American put in just one ace, while Gublis smacked 7.
The second set featured similar serve statistics for Fish, but Gulbis’s serve dropped off considerably. With only 46% of first serves in, Fish was able to get his first looks at the Latvian’s serve.
Both Fish and Gulbis contributed to the wild third set. The Latvian’s shot selection started to deteriorate, so that he more resembled the player who lost in the first round at the French Open and Wimbledon. Fish snagged the early break in the set, but the real drama came on Gulbis’s serve at 3-5.
The American earned 5 match points on Gulbis’s serve; Gulbis dug deep to fight each of them off. The crowd seemed to expect the Latvian to get the break back when Fish served for the match at 5-4, but the American held his nerve and kept cool to get the win.
