Ivan Dodig fails to build on his huge Montreal upset of Rafael Nadal from one day earlier. Janko Tipsarevic takes Dodig out in straight sets on Thursday and advances to the quarterfinals.
Janko Tipsarevic emerged unscathed from an all-unseeded third-round clash at the Rogers Cup on Thursday, rolling over Ivan Dodig 6-1, 6-4. Tipsarevic needed just one hour and 10 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash against Tomas Berdych.
Both men were coming off three set victories, but Dodig to a much more emotional extent. The 41st-ranked Croat staged a miraculous comeback to stun Rafael Nadal 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) in three hours and nine minutes. Tipsarevic needed almost three hours to get past Fernando Verdasco, also on Wednesday.
Not surprisingly, Dodig came out flat against Tipsarevic and never fully recovered. Tipsarevic dropped only six service points in the first set and allowed his opponent no break chances. Two breaks of his own were more than enough for the Serb to finish off the set with ease at 5-1.
Dodig raised his level slightly in the second, but it hardly mattered. Tipsarevic continued to be flawless on serve, refusing to yield even a single break point while winning all 15 of his first-serve efforts. The world No. 24 added one more break and closed out the proceedings with the match on his racket at 5-4.
Tipsarevic finished with four aces and two double-faults while Dodig recorded seven aces and also doubled twice.
