Ivo Karlovic beats Juan Monaco in a third-set tiebreaker to reach the Montreal second round on Monday. Karlovic awaits either Gilles Simon or Philipp Petzschner.
Ivo Karlovic survived a first-round thriller at the Rogers Cup on Monday afternoon, defeating Juan Monaco 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(5). Karlovic needed two hours and 34 minutes to set up a second-round clash against either Gilles Simon or Philipp Petzschner.
While sets two and three featured a surprising amount of return points won, the opener progressed like a standard Karlovic match. Neither man faced a single break point en route to a first-set tiebreaker. Monaco seized an early mini-break, and that was all he would need as he did not lose one service point. For good measure, though, the Argentine added one more return point before closing out the set on his racket.
Karlovic picked up his play--especially from the baseline--in set two. The 6'10'' Croat earned two scalps of the Monaco serve on the way to a commanding 5-1 advantage. Karlovic actually failed to serve it out on his first chance, but he sealed the deal with little trouble on serve at 5-3.
The world No. 125 continued to be the better player in the third, but he still struggled to pull away from his opponent. That's because Monaco fought off a total of five break points--including four in the same game--to force a decisive tiebreaker. One early mini-break paced Karlovic to a 6-4 lead, but he double-faulted on his first match point. Nonetheless, Karlovic clinched victory at 6-5 with a solid return of a Monaco first serve.
Karlovic wrapped up his effort with 15 aces and two double-faults.
