(15) Fernando Verdasco d. (Q) Tobias Kamke 5-7, 6-3, 6-3
Verdasco advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday afternoon, dismissing Kamke in a three-set, rain-delayed match. The Spaniard needed a total of two hours and five minutes to set up a meeting with Janko Tipsarevic. Kamke had taken control early on Tuesday with a flawless first set. The 95th-ranked German faced no break points and struck at the critical time--at 6-5--for the quick advantage.
The tide turned in set two, however, with Verdasco seizing two service breaks. The world No. 20's second break of the day came at 5-3 and forced a third in style. Rain midway through the decisive set pushed the match back to Wednesday, but Verdasco still managed to hold onto his momentum. Montreal's No. 15 seed consolidated his lead and used a routine hold at 5-3 to progress deeper into the summer's first hard-court Masters event.
Janko Tipsarevic d. (Q) Alejandro Falla 7-5, 6-1
Tipsarevic beat the rain on Tuesday by seeing off Falla in just one hour and 17 minutes. Falla managed to keep it close for a while, but the Colombian cracked at the crucial moment late in the first set. Tipsarevic struck at 6-5, capitalizing on his fourth break-point chance to take the opening frame of play.
Falla went away without much of a fight in the second, and he remained hopeless against his opponent's serve. In fact, Tipsarevic did not face a single break point the entire match. The 24th-ranked Serb added two more breaks and finished off the proceedings with one more routine hold at 5-1. Tipsarevic wrapped up his effort with five aces and three double-faults while winning 83 percent of his first-serve points.
