Victorious Tsonga tested by Fognini, Tomic advances
8/9/11 4:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
Wimbledon semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the second round with a tricky straight-set win over Fabio Fognini of Italy.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (13) def. Fabio Fognini 6-4, 7-6(0)
For the half of the first set, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga looked well-positioned to breeze through this match with ease. Unfortunately for team Tsonga, the Frenchman allowed Fabio Fognini back in the match. Midway through the opening set, the Frenchman’s forehand side began breaking down.
Fortunately for Tsonga, Fognini, who is a clay court specialist, wasn’t in a real position to take advantage. The Italian was able to keep pace in the second set long enough to force the tiebreaker, but Tsonga proved to be too experienced to allow Fognini to steal a set.
Tsonga played a magnificent tiebreaker complete with fabulous angles and good serving. Fognini was completely shut out of the breaker. Tsonga will face Bernard Tomic in the second round.
Bernard Tomic (W) def. Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(5), 6-3
This was a bit of sloppy match from Australia’s Bernard Tomic. The Canadian Open wildcard was loose off both wings, with unforced errors coming too frequently. Fortunately for the Australian’s camp, Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu was also far from his best.
Lu had a boatload of break points against Tomic, a whopping 10 in all. But the Australian was crafty enough to stave off all but 2 of them. Lu wasn’t nearly so successful. The Taiwanese only saved 1 of 4 break points.
This was the first match for Tomic since his impressive run at Wimbledon and the rust in his game was obvious. He will need to be much better to get past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.
