Paul-Henri Mathieu makes his ATP comeback and beats Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straight sets on Tuesday in Montpellier. Philipp Kohlschreiber also advances to the second round.
(WC) Paul-Henri Mathieu d. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4, 6-4
Mathieu returned to ATP action for the first time since 2010 and defeated Stebe in round one of the Open Sud de France on Tuesday afternoon. The Frenchman, who had been out with a knee injury, played a Challenger event last week but lost in the opening round. This time he rose to the occasion in front of his home crowd and broke serve four times to prevail in one hour and 24 minutes.
Stebe, who fell to Lleyton Hewitt in the Australian Open first round and is now 0-3 at the ATP level in 2012, struggled the entire way. The German served at just 53 percent and won only 40 percent of his second-serve points. He took an injury timeout prior to the last game of the match, but it did nothing to stop his opponent's momentum and Mathieu served things out with ease. Next up for the wild card is either Jarkko Nieminen or Maxime Teixeira.
(7) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Olivier Rochus 6-1, 6-4
Kohlschreiber avenged a loss from earlier this season in convincing fashion, as he rolled over Rochus in one hour and 25 minutes on Tuesday. The German fell to Rochus in the Auckland semifinals, but he showed right from the start that it would be much different this time around. Kohlschreiber saved both of the break points he faced in the first set and earned two breaks of his own before finishing it off on serve at 5-1.
Rochus raised his level slightly in the second and earned one scalp of his opponent's serve. The 31-year-old Belgian, however, continued to struggle with his own service games and he again got broken twice. Kohlschreiber booked his spot in the second round with a hold at 5-4. Montpellier's No. 7 seed now awaits a meeting with Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
