2/3/12 12:27 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gael Monfils is through to the Montpellier quarters after taking out Michael Russell in straight sets on Thursday. Jarkko Nieminen also reaches the last eight with a victory over Paul-Henri Mathuieu.
(3) Gael Monfils d. Michael Russell 6-3, 6-3
Monfils made his 2012 debut at the Open Sud de France with a routine straight-set victory over Russell on Thursday night. The No. 3 seed prevailed after one hour and 16 minutes. Russell made it competitive for a while, holding his first three service games without facing a break point. However, the American double-faulted twice in succession to donate serve at 3-3 and from there it was all over.
Russell dropped serve at 3-5 to end the first set and again at 1-2 in the second with an errant backhand. Monfils never came close to giving the break back as he did not face a single break point throughout the entire match. The 13th-ranked Frenchman closed out the proceedings at 5-3 with his 17th ace. Next up for Monfils is a quarterfinal clash against Jarkko Nieminen.
(8) Jarkko Nieminen d. (WC) Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6(4), 6-1
Mathieu's first ATP event since 2010 ended on Thursday with a second-round loss to Nieminen in Montpellier. Mathieu managed to stay close early but eventually succumbed to the No. 8 seed after one hour and 20 minutes of play. The Frenchman, who has been out with a knee injury, did well to break back at 3-4 in the first set for his only real highlight of the day.
Nieminen assumed complete control starting with the opening-set tiebreaker. The Finn rolled through it seven points to four then raced through the second while dropping just a single game. Nieminen broke twice and saved both of the break points he faced before serving out the proceedings at 5-1.
