Berdych, Monfils roll into Montpellier semifinals
2/3/12 6:56 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tomas Berdych beats Nicolas Mahut in straight sets on Friday in Montpellier. Berdych is joined in the last four by Gael Monfils, a routine winner over Jarkko Nieminen.
(1) Tomas Berdych d. Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-4
Berdych blasted 14 aces while double-faulting only once and he won 31 of 33 first-serve points as he took care of Mahut in one hour and 13 minutes during quarterfinal action at the Open Sud de France on Friday afternoon. The top seed took control with a break midway through the opening set and he never came close to giving it back. Berdych, who dropped a mere three points in his first five service games, wrapped up the set with his seventh ace.
Out of nowhere, Mahut broke in the second game of set two and he consolidated it en route to a 3-0 lead. For Berdych, however, the hiccup only proved to be a wakeup call. The seventh-ranked Czech earned two consecutive breaks of his own and served out the proceedings at 5-4. He clinched victory on his first match point with yet another ace. Next up for Berdych is either Richard Gasquet or Philipp Kohlschreiber.
(3) Gael Monfils d. (8) Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-3
Monfils needed just 53 minutes to race past Nieminen on Friday evening and book a spot in the Montpellier semifinals. The world No. 13 fired nine aces and lost only six points in nine service games. One break obviously would have been enough for Monfils in the first set, but he added one more for good measure at 5-3 when Nieminen netted a backhand volley.
The No. 3 seed allowed his opponent only three return points in the second, just as he had done in the first. One break gave Monfils some breathing room and he served things out the rest of the way. A love hold at 5-3 set up an all-French semifinal showdown between Monfils and Gilles Simon. Simon advanced earlier in the day with a 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-2 victory over Guillaume Rufin.
