Florian Mayer takes out Gilles Muller in straight sets on Monday in Montpellier. Mayer advances to the second round and awaits either Nicolas Mahut or Albert Ramos.
Florian Mayer earned his first win of the season with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Gilles Muller in the first round of the Open Sud de France on Monday evening. Mayer saved all seven of the break points he faced to advance after one hour and 19 minutes of play.
A tense first set saw both players hold the entire way, although not without some drama in the 12th game. Muller had three consecutive set points with Mayer serving at 5-6, 0-40, but he did not get a single return in play during that stretch. Mayer survived then earned mini-breaks at 2-2 and 5-3 to dominate the tiebreaker.
From there it was pretty much all over for Muller. The Luxembourgian donated serve midway through the second and got no looks at a break point after having seven chances in set one. Mayer was extended to deuce at 5-3, but he capitalized on his second match point with a service winner.
The German, who has been hampered by a hip injury this month and missed the Australian Open, dropped only five points in his last five service games. He awaits either Nicolas Mahut or Albert Ramos in the second round.
