  • Simon, Gasquet reach Open Sud de France quarterfinals

    2/1/12 10:43 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gilles Simon opens in Montpellier with an easy win over Flavio Cipolla on Wednesday. Simon is joined in the quarterfinals by fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, a straight-set winner over Nikolay Davydenko.

    (2) Gilles Simon d. Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 6-2

Following a first-round bye, Simon kicked off his campaign at the Open Sud de France with a straight-set victory over Flavio Cipolla on Wednesday evening. Simon fired nine aces without double-faulting and he saved all four of the break points he faced to advance after one hour and 33 minutes. The Frenchman seed needed just one break in the first set before surviving a tough service game at 5-3 to close it out.

Set two was even more routine for Simon, as Cipolla struggled on serve. The Italian won a mere five of 13 first-serve points and failed to save any of the two break points he faced. Cipolla got a look at one more break point after earning three chances in the opener, but he failed to convert. As a result, two breaks were more than enough for Simon. Next up for Montpellier's No. 2 seed is French wild card Guillaume Rufin, who upset Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.

    (4) Richard Gasquet d. (WC) Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4

Gasquet improved to 3-1 lifetime against Davydenko with a straightforward victory during second-round action on Wednesday. The Frenchman struck 10 aces while double-faulting twice and he won 84 percent of his first-serve points without giving his opponent a single break chance. Gasquet needed just one hour and 26 minutes to set up a quarterfinal showdown against No. 7 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Davydenko donated serve once in each set an that was one too many times. The 30-year-old Russian's only slight opening came early in the second but he failed to break and promptly drpped his own serve midway through the second. Gasquet consolidated it the rest of the way and wrapped up the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-4.
