  • Nishikori and Benneteau move into Monte Carlo third round

    4/18/12 6:03 PM | Cheryl Murray
Kei Nishikori and Julien Benneteau found their way through second round opponents to earn a spot in the Monte Carlo Masters final 16.

    Kei Nishikori (12) def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2

Young Japanese star Kei Nishikori looked in fine form in his straight-set victory over French wildcard Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Frenchman upset Donald Young in the opening round in a 6-0, 6-1 rout. He was not so fortunate with his second round opponent.

Nishikori’s serve is not a weapon; the no. 12 seed faced six break points during the match, but his ground strokes got him out of trouble all but once. The difference for Mathieu was that he was ineffective on the big points. Nishikori converted on four of five break points to wrap up the win in straights.

Julien Benneteau def. Jurgen Melzer (15) 6-4, 6-3

This was a tidy win for French veteran Julien Benneteau. Jurgen Melzer of Austria has had some good results in 2012, namely a win in Memphis, but his current form is a bit dodgy.

Benneteau, who had the backing of the crowd, took advantage of a few too many errors from Melzer and converted on a pair of break points in each set to move into the round of 16.

Benneteau will face down the No. 3 seed Andy Murray on Thursday as the entire remaining field takes the court in a jam-packed and star-filled day at the Monte Carlo Country Club.
