  • Mathieu destroys Young, Benneteau advances

    4/16/12 8:08 PM | Cheryl Murray
Monday proved successful for French tennis, with Julien Benneteau and wildcard Paul-Henri Matheiu advanced into the second round at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Julien Benneteau def. Marcel Granollers 6-3, 3-6, 6-2

This first-round match had a number of momentum swings. Julien Benneteau started off strong and with support of the crowd behind him. Granollers was off his game in the opening set and went down an early break to give Benneteau the lead.

The Frenchman looked to be in firm control of the match even partway through the second set. The world No. 31 took an early lead with Granollers still looking for his range. The Spaniard finally found his footing and began hitting with more authority. It threw Benneteau off enough for Granollers to earn the break back again and another to level the match at a set apiece.

To the crowd’s delight, Benneteau took control of the match again in the third and closed out the win with a comfortable 6-2 scoreline.

    Paul-Henri Mathieu def. Donald Young 6-0, 6-1

This was a dismal performance by American Donald Young, who sits at 50th in the world compared to Mathieu's No. 352. But the scoreline seemed to suggest that the rankings should be the other way around. Young was broken in six of his seven service games and in the end only managed to win 36% of the points in the match.

Mathieu moves into the second round, where he will face the winner of Kei Nishikori and Albert Ramos.
