  • Murray handles Troicki, through in straights

    4/17/12 2:36 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Murray booked an early spot in the round of 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters with an easy win over Serbia’s Viktor Troicki.

Tuesday’s play in Monte Carlo will mostly feature the end of first-round play, but Andy Murray and Viktor Troicki took to the court for a second-round encounter.

This match was all Murray from the start to the finish. Troicki was completely helpless in the first set. Murray lost three points on his own serve, and perhaps even more impressively, only lost nine points on Troicki’s serve. The Serb didn’t come anywhere near earning a break point.

Murray’s first-serve percentage went from climbed from 73% in the first set to an impressive 89% in the second. He was once again utterly dominant on his own serve, but Troicki had a little more success holding off the Scot’s return game.

But even with Troicki fighting hard and staving off two of four break points, Murray still closed out the win easily.

Murray awaits the winner of Julien Benneteau and Jurgen Melzer in the third round.

Didn't do a "Samson" then? Phew!
Look at those first serve percentages, fantabulous! 89% Wow!
Come on!

a lean mean fighting machine. he means buss and Fedal better be aware or you find two men infront.

advan , 4/17/12 5:34 PM

Maybe Fedal should also get a crew cut.

nadline , 4/17/12 6:07 PM

Awesome performance. Pity about the hair.

ed251137 , 4/17/12 6:56 PM

You know, I might actually weep if Roger did that to his hair....

cherylmurray , 4/17/12 7:30 PM

82% 1st serves? My dog, I don't believe it. Score keeper must have dyscalculia. Could this be the year muzz gets his first clay title?

alex , 4/17/12 7:38 PM

Chery, I'm sure that if Roger got a crew cut his hair will grow again, except that it might be grey next time as he is approaching the ripe old age of 31!

nadline , 4/17/12 8:01 PM

Superb, well done AndyM, good performance in the doubles too though I wish He would concentrate on the singles, I feel he over stretches himself. Know it gives the players a feel for how the court is playing but still two matches on the same day.

mojo , 4/17/12 8:44 PM

The way Murray is playing, he will beat Djoko.

holdserve , 4/18/12 4:02 AM

No, Djokovic won't let him play the way other opponents have let Murray play.

RickyDimon , 4/18/12 5:01 AM

mojo, I disagree, Andy seems to have problems in the early rounds of tournaments and the more "match practise" he gets the better. Besides, these were very short matches...;)
Ricky, one match at a time, and at this stage we don't "know" who'll be in the semis. Besides last year Andy pushed Nole and Rafa very, very close on clay, so again who "knows" what will happen this year.

deuce , 4/18/12 7:11 AM

I didn't want to be a spoiled sport but I agree with Ricky. Triocki didn't turn up. It was a very one-sided match with Troicki playing lamentable tennis. I know danica had predicted that Murray win win easily because Troicki is 'rubbish' at the moment but I wasn't expecting him to be that bad.

Murray already had a 4>0 lead against him anyway, so he would probably have won whatever Troicki did, but it was definitely handed to him, gift wrapped.

nadline , 4/18/12 8:24 AM

goodness nadline, you've got such a downer on Andy. :( Can't you even be pleased he's had the best start to the clay season that I, or anyone else for that matter, has EVER seen?

deuce , 4/18/12 12:15 PM

deuce, I'm just saying what I saw. Did you see the match? Troicki was woeful as danica had predicted. I'm a neutral observer.

nadline , 4/18/12 1:59 PM

One of the Sky commentators actually said that Murray should beware that not every player would let him have his way like Troicki did.

Are we allowed to say what we think or should we all pretend to be nice about everything?

nadline , 4/18/12 2:01 PM

^^ Well,
It all depends on what tennis player `we` are referring to...
Doesn't it just Nadline ;-)
Muzzy was H-U-G-E in his opening round regardless, and that's better than he normally is.

Twinge , 4/18/12 2:41 PM

^^^Whatever. The bottom is Murray won at the end of the day.

nadline , 4/18/12 2:52 PM

interesting, Rafa's match lasted two minutes less than Nole's...:)

natashao , 4/18/12 4:02 PM

sorry, guys, wrong thread...

natashao , 4/18/12 4:16 PM

the reason muzz trashed troicki was his 82% 1st serves, way above anything I've seen muzz produce before. and given that the serve is the first shot of every point I think you have to conclude that toicki's playing good or bad had nothing to do with the outcome.
Seems to me like it was another of these blinder performances by muzz, when everything in his game comes togather, a bit like the one he produced against roddick at Queens last year, when roddick had to ask him to 'keep it social'.
