  • Nadal destroys Giraldo in Miami opener

    3/24/12 5:26 AM | Cheryl Murray
Rafael Nadal came into Miami on a mission. The Spaniard was ruthless in his second round rout of Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.

This was all one-way traffic for world No. 2 Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard sealed his straight-set victory over Santiago Giraldo in an hour and nine minutes.

Nadal came into the Miami Masters off a disappointing semifinal loss in Indian Wells to Roger Federer, but the world No. 2 seems to have set that aside.

Giraldo made no dent in Nadal’s game. The Colombian was ineffective in his return games, earning a single break point opportunity, but with no break to show for it. He had just as much trouble on serve. Nadal held him to just 2 games in the entire match, with the Spaniard reeling off 10 straight games to end Giraldo’s misery.

With that win, Nadal moves comfortably into the third round, where he will face the No. 25 seed Radek Stepanek.

Well done Rafa. Hope you carry on with this ruthless mode and beats everyone who stands in your way. Vamos!

That's the way to do it Rafa.

nadline , 3/24/12 7:01 AM

Just as well Rafa's game doesn't suit Miami. Lol

nadline , 3/24/12 7:12 AM

Still took 1 hour 9 minutes for this result!!!

velliat53 , 3/24/12 8:06 AM

@velliat53, rafa said he was expecting a tough match when Giraldo was hitting the ball really hard and there was a 2-2 0-30 moment on rafa serve which required him to hit some good serves and dig himself out of trouble, from then on it was a rout !

vamosrafa , 3/24/12 8:17 AM

Wow! This match wasn't televised, but it looks like Rafa had a very easy time with Giraldo! Nice way to start off!

Vamos, Rafa! Keep up the good work. Next is Stepanek.

Nativenewyorker , 3/24/12 8:45 AM

Sorry vamosrafa, could not see the match. The result looked really lopsided. Hence my comment above.

velliat53 , 3/24/12 8:56 AM

Because of the timing of Rafa's match yesterday I knew I wouldn't be able to follow the scores so I watched his match against Santiago at Barca last year and went to bed confident that unless something went seriously wrong, Giraldo was no threat whatsoever and Rafa would walk it.

nadline , 3/24/12 11:30 AM

Ignore me NNY - don't know why I thought you would be in Miami.

Great win for Rafa against Giraldo - hope he keeps up this sort of play against Stepanek.

great to see Rafa wining in such manner...I did not get to see the match but the result is real treat to my eyes...keep up the good work, Rafa!

Vamos Rafa!!!

Bodo at it again..This fat old guy is obsessed with putting Rafa down..

sanju , 3/24/12 3:41 PM

sanju, don't bother with Bodo. Once Rafa starts winning again, Bodo will quickly sing a different tune. It's not the first time that Rafa didn't win a title in a while. If Rafa is so desperate, he would have hopped to S. America for the clay court swing there and wins some titles. It's just not Rafa's style to be so desperate, he just take things in his own stride, knowing that his time will come.

luckystar , 3/24/12 6:21 PM

Great, i really like Nadal and i hope he will play at his best in this tournament :)

Sanju, there will always be people who like to put Rafa down no matter what he has achieved in tennis. Don't torture yourself by reading that negative stuff.

You are a Rafa fan for a reason and that is the only thing that is important. Be happy with him when he wins but also accept that sometimes he may lose or even go through bad patches.

One thing we Rafa fans can be sure of is that he will never give up - the warrior spirit in him is far too strong.

schatz , 3/24/12 9:30 PM

No problem! I will be in Florida next month!

As far as Bodo, he is so biased against Rafa it isn't even funny. Don't even bother to read any of his crap. If you want some intelligent tennis, read Steve Tignor.
