  • Djokovic handles Baghdatis in straight sets

    3/25/12 4:40 AM | Cheryl Murray
Novak Djokovic had a winning start to his Miami 2012 campaign with a win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis under the lights on Key Biscayne.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic came out swinging in the first set against Marcos Baghdatis. The Serb played his best brand of aggressive baseline tennis, which completely shut Baghdatis’s return game. The Cypriot did not earn a single break point for the set. Djokovic secured just one break of serve, but it was sufficient to take the lead.

Djokovic’s form dropped off a bit mid-way through the second set. He already secured an early break of serve, but at 4-3, he lost focus and fed Baghdatis second serve after second serve. The Cypriot earned himself a couple of break points, but Djokovic fought them off. Baghdatis wasn’t ready to give in, though. He kept Djokovic waiting for more than 15 minutes before finally surrendering the chance to get the break back.

The Serb moves into the third round, where he will take on countryman and Davis Cup teammate Viktor Troicki.

where's the nole support on TT? :) i think they'l have a lot to cheer about this week

Just watched the match and it wasn't a flawless though pumped up performance by Nole. He was certainly relieved to win with the chest beating and yelling at the end of the match. Djokovic made 8 UEs in the 8th game of the 2nd set trying to hold serve.

nadline , 3/25/12 2:54 PM

Yep not flawless but still good enough to win and in straight sets. Baggy can't beat him from the baseline, but I think that's where Baggy feels most comfortable.

luckystar , 3/25/12 5:34 PM

I think Nole did well to get through this in straight sets. Baggy is a tough opponent for him. He showed some of the game that has troubled Nole in past matches. But Nole raised his level of play at key points in the match.

It doesn't matter if it wasn't a flawless performance at this point in the tournament. The goal is to win. Nole is searching for that great form he had last year and will need to work to get there.

This was a good test for Nole against a quality opponent.

Nativenewyorker , 3/25/12 9:06 PM

But had that been Rafa, with the same performance, we would still be debating his shortcomings.

nadline , 3/25/12 10:45 PM

Come on! You know some of us better than that! If Rafa meets a tough opponent and gets by in straight sets, that's a good thing.

The goal is to win in these early rounds, get your game going and be in the best form possible for the latter part of the tournament.

I always try to look for the good things and then maybe mention some things he can work on. I am not invested in Nole, so I wouldn't analyze his matches as carefully.

I did watch the first set only..and thought Djokovic played very well...there were some good rallies..Nole served really well...Baggy couldn't do much with his return game...still, it was competitive...I would say it was a good performance by Novak against someone who has posed problems for him in the past...
