  • Djokovic earns a spot opposite Murray in Miami final

    3/31/12 4:25 AM | Cheryl Murray
Novak Djokovic dispatched Juan Monaco under the lights at the Sony Ericsson Open, with the Serb now into his second consecutive Miami final.

Novak Djokovic put on a display similar to his showing in the Miami quarters against David Ferrer. The Serb once again rolled in the first set, but faltered a bit in the second.

Argentina’s Juan Monaco was completely over-run in the opening set. The No. 21 seed was so out-matched, that he won just 8 points in the entire set. Djokovic reeled off the first six games barely breaking a sweat.

Monaco didn’t hold until the first game of the second set. It was again a struggle, but the Argentine finally held to the delight of the crowd.

Djokovic’s form dropped enough from the brilliance of the first set that Monaco actually managed to find some rhythm. The Argentine’s grinding baseline style lured Djokovic into some unforced errors; Monaco also started retrieving better, which gave him some opportunities.

The Serb snagged the first break of the set and earned himself the chance to serve out the match at 5-4. But in an almost carbon copy of his performance against Ferrer, he was broken and the set had to decided with a tiebreaker.

Djokovic went up a mini-break and served with match point, but after making his first serve, he smacked the ball into the net to erase his lead yet again. Fortunately for the Serb, Ferrer returned the favor as he was serving at 5-6. Djokovic took the match on a Monaco forehand that soared feet behind the baseline.

The Serb will take on familiar foe Andy Murray in the final.
