  • Davydenko gets first win over Blake, Andujar goes down

    3/22/12 3:21 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nikolay Davydenko secured his first-ever win over American James Blake as the Miami Masters got under way on Wednesday.

Nikolay Davydenko def. James Blake 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko went into this first round match on a seven-loss streak against American veteran James Blake. And in the first set, Davydenko looked as though he would succumb to Blake’s baseline game once again.

The first set was a mess of service breaks for both men. Davydenko dropped serve three times in the set, while Blake lost his serve twice to take the set 6-4.

The Russian rallied in the second and third sets, shoring up most of the damage on his serve. Blake managed to secure one last break in the third set, but it was not enough to stave off the loss.

Santiago Giraldo def. Pablo Andujar 6-3, 6-2

Pablo Andujar, who made a splash last week in Indian Wells, crashed out in the first round in Miami. The Spaniard advanced all the way to the round of 16 and took a set from Novak Djokovic in the Californian desert; Miami was far less kind.

Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo upended Andujar in surprisingly easy straight sets to advance to the second round. Andujar faced 10 break points for the match, while Giraldo fought off the only break point Andujar earned.

Giraldo moves into the second round, where he will face No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal.
