Former world No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez completed his ATP World Tour career late Wednesday, having fallen to Nicolas Mahut in three sets. The Frenchman is joined in round two by David Nalbandian, who beat Steve Darcis in straight sets.

David Nalbandian def. Steve Darcis 6-4, 7-6(0)

Former world No. 3 David Nalbandian is through to the second round after taking out Belgium’s Steve Darcis in straight sets. The veteran converted five of 14 break points en route to a 6-4, 7-6(0) victory in an hour and 56 minutes. By virtue of his first-round win, the Argentine extended his season record to 12-5.

Nalbandian is scheduled to take on 9th seed Janko Tipsarevic for a spot in the third round.

Nicolas Mahut def. (WC) Fernando Gonzalez 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3)

World No. 92 Nicolas Mahut won his opener against wildcard Fernando Gonzalez on Wednesday, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3). After splitting the first two sets, the Frenchman held three match points at 5-4. Unable to convert, Mahut collected three more at 6-3 in the tie-break. He ended the evening with 12 aces and four service breaks.

Mahut will face 7th seed Tomas Berdych in round two.

Former world No. 5 Gonzalez closes a 13-year professional career with 370 wins and 11 ATP Tour titles. The Chilean reached his career-high ranking in 2007, shortly after finishing runner-up to then-world No. 1 Roger Federer at the Australian Open.

Gonzalez leaves the ATP World Tour a three-time Olympic medal winner, having taken both silver (2008) and bronze (2004) in singles and gold with doubles partner Nicolas Massu (2004).

I'll always remember Gonzo's awesome forehand. I'm most impressed with his performances in two tournaments in particular - the AO 2007 and Barcelona 2009; AO2007 for his quick and awesome movements and match play; Barcelona 2009 for his awesome forehand, especially in that match vs Verdasco. All the best to you Gonzo, for all your future endeavors.

are you in Belgrade? I hear Nalby will play at Serbia Open. I had the pleasure of watching him in DC ;)

Gonzo has always been one of my favourite players to watch. I was lucky enough to see him play some lights out tennis and shall remember him fondly. I wish him all the very best in the future.
